Abstract

Abstract: The aim of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of multimedia education with the CTL approach on the understanding of geometric concepts in mathematics in fourth grade students. The study was applied in terms of purpose and was a semi-experimental study with an experimental and control group. The statistical population of the study consisted of 890 female fourth grade elementary school students in Aligudarz city who were studying in the academic year 2024-2025. 70 students were selected by cluster random sampling method and were arranged in two control groups (35 people) and experimental group (35 people) in pairs based on pre-test scores. For multimedia education, a pencil educational pac and educational videos were used for 6 sessions (two sessions per lesson) for three topics of the fourth grade elementary school math lesson. The score of a researcher-made test was used to measure the understanding of geometric concepts in the math lesson. The validity of the test was confirmed by experts and the reliability of the test was obtained by using Cronbach's alpha of 0.852. The results showed that the multimedia teaching method is effective in understanding geometric concepts related to perpendicular and parallel lines, quadrilaterals, and perimeter and area in fourth-grade female elementary school students in Aligudarz city. This research has successfully identified that interactive multimedia with the CTL approach has great potential to improve mathematics learning at the elementary school level. Characteristics of interactive multimedia with an effective CTL approach include the use of rich and relevant visuals to real-world contexts, interactivity that allows active exploration, authentic presentation of problems, constructive feedback, scaffolding that suits the needs of students, and the integration of elements of art and aesthetics. This finding has important implications for mathematics learning practices in elementary schools. Multimedia teachers and developers can use these characteristics as a guide in designing interactive multimedia with an effective CTL approach.
