The Current Pattern of Political Education in Students of Islamic Azad University: The Approach of Foundation Data Theory

Document Type : Research Paper

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the current state of the political education curriculum at Islamic Azad University. The research was conducted using a qualitative approach and grounded theory methodology. The study population included all stakeholders involved in the political education curriculum for students at Islamic Azad University. Participants were selected purposefully based on specific criteria. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 14 faculty members teaching political education courses or other university professors, 10 students, and 5 heads of academic departments. Data were analyzed using open, axial, and selective coding. To ensure validity and reliability, Lincoln and Guba’s trustworthiness criteria were applied. The results identified 24 core concepts and 9 main categories. These were structured within a paradigmatic model, with educational disconnection in the political education curriculum as the central category. The model included causal conditions (skill deficiencies, attitudinal weaknesses, environmental challenges); contextual factors (university management factors, environmental-contextual factors); facilitating intervening conditions (faculty professional development, accessibility, university support and infrastructure); constraining intervening conditions (organizational and environmental challenges, political interference, individual and operational obstacles); strategies (revising curriculum planning approaches, designing a strategic plan for applying ICT, adopting incentive policies, and delegating responsibility); and outcomes (failure to achieve intended curriculum objectives and inadequate acquisition of political education competencies).
